Choosing Your Siding

Siding types, styles and colors.

Keystone installs seven types of siding:

  • Vinyl
  • Fiber Cement
  • Wood
  • Engineered Wood
  • Metal
  • Natural Stone & Stone Veneer
  • Composite

Our siding services

Keystone offers every type and style of siding you could want, from lap siding to board and batten and shakes. Colors depend on the product: CertainTeed describes its vinyl colors as fade-resistant, and James Hardie offers factory-applied ColorPlus® Technology finishes.

The one that fits your budget, the look you want and how much upkeep you’re willing to do. That’s why we install seven types instead of pushing one, and we’ll walk you through the pros and cons for your home.

The best types of siding

We install both, so it comes down to your budget, the look you want and upkeep.

  • Fiber cement (like James Hardie) has the look of painted wood, and James Hardie says it resists fire, water, weather and pests.
  • Vinyl (like CertainTeed) comes in many colors and profiles, and CertainTeed describes its vinyl profiles as maintenance-free.

Repairs, Lifespan & Permits

Repairs, lifespan, timing and permits.

Keystone repairs siding, and a repair is often enough when only a few pieces are damaged. When damage is widespread, keeps coming back or has reached the wall underneath, we’ll recommend replacement and explain why.

It depends on the product, the installation and the weather, so we go by the manufacturers’ published warranties:

  • James Hardie fiber cement: a transferable 30-year, non-prorated substrate limited warranty, plus a 15-year ColorPlus® finish warranty covering paint and labor, according to James Hardie.
  • CertainTeed vinyl: a Lifetime Limited Warranty, according to CertainTeed.
  • Keystone: our own 5-year labor warranty on siding installation, separate from the manufacturer’s warranty.

Most homeowners choose vinyl, which typically takes about 4 to 7 days. Other siding products can take longer, and a combined siding and windows project takes about 7 to 10 days.

On one- and two-family homes in New Jersey, replacing your roof, siding or windows generally doesn't need a permit. Installing any amount of polypropylene siding (like CertainTeed Cedar Impressions®) does, and so does making a window opening bigger, moving it or cutting a new one.
